INCI: POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE.

OTHER NAMES: caustic potash , lye

CHEMICAL FORMULA: KOH)

APPEARANCE: Odourless  WHITE - OFF WHITE FLAKES

SOLUBILITY : Water

Potassium hydroxide (chemical formula: KOH), also known as caustic potash or lye,is

a highly caustic, strong alkaline compound.

It typically appears as an odorless, white or yellowish solid and is widely used in manufacturing liquid soaps

Uses and Applications

Soap and Detergents: While sodium hydroxide is used for making hard bar soaps, potassium hydroxide is the primary lye used in the production of soft, liquid soaps and whipped soaps.

It is used to fix the pH of a product or as a cleaning agent in soap. In cleansers, it is used for the saponification of oils.

Sapnification is the process of creating fatty acid metal salts from triglycerides and a strong base. During this process, Potassium Hydroxide is used up and is not present in the final product.

Chemical Properties

Formula: KOH

Reactivity: It is highly soluble in water, and the dissolution process generates a significant amount of heat.

Deliquescence: It readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air.

Mechanism: Like sodium hydroxide, it works in cleaning products and certain industrial processes by breaking down greasy organic compounds and hydrating proteins and fats

3. Safety Hazards and Handling
Because it is a strong base, potassium hydroxide is highly corrosive and can cause severe chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes

Skin & Eyes: Solutions ranging from mild to highly corrosive require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly eye protection.

Inhalation: Breathing dust or mist from the compound can cause severe respiratory irritation, coughing, or pulmonary edema.

Keep Children, Pets and Infirm away from the area at all times.

Have a source of water close by so that you can quickly and easily rinse any pills.

Always mix in a well ventilated area and mix as close to the point of use as possible to avoid spills.
